A Pablo Picasso etching stolen from a Milwaukee art gallery in 2018 has been found after a local landlord discovered it while clearing out a vacant apartment, according to the gallery owner and police contact described in the report. The work is the Picasso print "Torero," which Bill DeLind said he had assumed was gone for good.
DeLind said police called him after the landlord turned the framed piece over to authorities. When he saw it, he recognized it immediately, noting that the sticker from DeLind Fine Art Appraisals was still on the back, just as it had been when the print was stolen.
The landlord, Tim Dertz, told WISN-TV that he found the artwork in an apartment after an eviction. He said it appeared to have been hanging there for a long time because of the dust on it, and an antique dealer friend later told him it appeared to be the missing Picasso.
DeLind said the piece had been appraised at between $35,000 and $50,000 when it was stolen. Milwaukee police said the case remains under investigation, and DeLind said the artwork is still in police custody while insurance matters are resolved.
