Spider-Man: Brand New Day breaks Avengers: Endgame's North American box office record
- Sony Pictures said "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" earned $360 million in North American ticket sales in its opening weekend, setting a new record.
- The film surpassed the previous North American opening record of $357 million set by "Avengers: Endgame" in 2019.
- Sony had projected a $355 million opening, but stronger-than-expected Sunday business pushed the total higher.
- The fourth Spider-Man film starring Tom Holland also helped drive the biggest weekend ever for North American movie theaters when combined with "The Odyssey."
- The domestic box office is up more than 15% from last year, with more than $6.2 billion in ticket sales so far, according to Rentrak.
Sony Pictures said "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" set a new North American opening weekend record with $360 million in ticket sales from theaters in the United States and Canada. The film topped the previous record of $357 million held by "Avengers: Endgame" since 2019.
Sony had expected the movie to open at about $355 million, but stronger Sunday business lifted the total above that estimate. Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, said the company would take pride in holding the record.
Before "Avengers: Endgame," no film had opened above $300 million domestically. Earlier records included "Avengers: Infinity War" with $257 million and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" with $247 million. Holland's previous Spider-Man film, "No Way Home," opened to $260 million in 2021.
The strong performance of "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" and "The Odyssey," which share cast members including Holland, Zendaya and Jon Bernthal, also helped produce the biggest weekend ever for North American movie theaters. Rentrak said domestic box office revenue is up more than 15% year over year, with more than $6.2 billion in ticket sales so far.
