Asian shares were mostly higher on Wednesday after U.S. stocks slipped a bit further from their records. The Kospi in South Korea gained 3.7% to 6,579.04, driven by renewed buying of computer chipmakers, with Samsung Electronics rising 6.7% and SK Hynix up 5.5%.
Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 increased by 0.8% to 67,524.06, while Taiwan’s Taiex advanced 0.9%. The Shanghai Composite index added 0.3% to 3,946.68, although the Hang Seng in Hong Kong slipped 1% to 25,401.92, and Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.5% to 9,209.40.
Oil prices also saw gains, with Brent crude rising 1% to $89.79 per barrel and U.S. benchmark crude increasing by 1% to $84.07. The ongoing conflict in Iran raises concerns about oil supply disruptions.
The renewed hostilities between the U.S. and Iran suggest a long-term reduction in shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which could further affect oil prices and inflation.
