He quickly rang the school bell and ordered his students and staff to evacuate to higher ground. Dawadi's decision saved at least 900 students from the devastating flash floods that occurred after a glacial collapse in the Himalayas.
As the floodwaters rose, Dawadi followed the students to a nearby hill and watched as his school was swept away by the torrent. The Tribhuvan Trishuli Secondary School had a total of 1,643 students, with many still on their way to school that morning.
The floods have resulted in significant destruction across northern Nepal, leaving thousands of children without classrooms and disrupting their education. Charity group Save the Children has reported that the disaster could cost students months of schooling.
