The Trump administration is advancing its efforts to fire Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook, two months after the Supreme Court allowed her to keep her job while she contests the president's termination efforts over mortgage fraud allegations that she has denied.
The Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision, ruled in June that Cook could remain in her position at least while her lawsuit challenging her firing is ongoing. Chief Justice John Roberts noted that there is nothing preventing President Trump from attempting to fire Cook again, provided she is given proper notice and an opportunity to contest it.
In a letter obtained by the Associated Press, White House aide Dan Scavino informed Cook that Trump is "considering removing you from your position" but noted the requirement for proper notice, giving her until August 26 to respond. The allegations against Cook stem from a criminal referral made last August, accusing her of declaring two homes as her primary residence to obtain lower mortgage rates.
Cook has defended herself vigorously, stating that the allegations are baseless and politically motivated. Her lawyer has argued that her mortgage applications accurately reflected her living situation and did not indicate any intent to defraud.
