Trump administration moves ahead with efforts to fire Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook
- The Trump administration is proceeding with efforts to fire Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook.
- The Supreme Court allowed Cook to remain in her position while she contests the termination.
- Cook is facing allegations of mortgage fraud, which she denies.
- The White House has given Cook until August 26 to challenge the potential removal.
- Cook's lawyer argues that her actions regarding her residences were not fraudulent.
The Trump administration is moving forward with its efforts to fire Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook, two months after the Supreme Court allowed her to retain her job while she fights the president’s effort to terminate her over mortgage fraud allegations that she has denied.
The justices in a 5-4 decision in June said Cook, who was nominated to the Fed’s Board of Governors by President Joe Biden, could remain in her post at least as long as her lawsuit challenging her firing goes on. The Trump administration is appealing a lower-court ruling in Cook’s favor.
In a letter this week, White House aide Dan Scavino informed Cook that Trump was “considering removing you from your position” but cited the Supreme Court’s requirement of proper notice, giving her until August 26 to challenge it. The attempt to fire Cook is based on allegations of mortgage fraud made by Bill Pulte, the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency.
Cook has defended herself against these allegations, stating that the president is attempting to oust her due to her refusal to yield to political pressure. Her lawyer argued that her declarations regarding her residences were accurate and did not reflect an intent to defraud.
