The Trump administration is moving forward with efforts to fire Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook, two months after the Supreme Court allowed her to retain her position while she fights the president’s attempts to terminate her due to mortgage fraud allegations she denies.
The Supreme Court ruled in a 5-4 decision that Cook could remain in her post at least until her lawsuit challenging her firing is resolved. Chief Justice John Roberts noted that nothing prohibits President Trump from attempting to fire Cook again, provided she is given proper notice and an opportunity to contest it.
In a recent letter, White House aide Dan Scavino informed Cook that Trump was considering her removal but emphasized the need for proper notice, allowing her until August 26 to respond. The allegations against Cook stem from a criminal referral last year accusing her of declaring two homes as her primary residence to obtain better mortgage rates.
Cook has defended herself, stating that the allegations are baseless and politically motivated, asserting that she has primarily lived in her Ann Arbor property since purchasing it in 2005. Her lawyer contends that her references to both properties were accurate and did not reflect any intent to defraud.
