US stocks hit a record as oil prices ease and inflation cools slightly
- The S&P 500 rose 0.7% to a record high, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average and Nasdaq composite also advanced.
- The rally followed a U.S. wholesale inflation report showing prices were 4.7% higher than a year earlier, less severe than June’s 5.5% increase and slightly below economists’ expectations.
- Treasury yields fell, and traders reduced the implied chance of a Federal Reserve rate hike at the September meeting to about 35% from roughly 50% two days earlier.
- Brent crude oil fell 2.1% to $87.07 a barrel, easing some inflation concerns and supporting stocks, especially real estate shares.
U.S. stocks closed at record levels after fresh data suggested inflation is easing somewhat and oil prices retreated. The S&P 500, Dow, and Nasdaq all gained, with the broader market benchmark topping its previous high from last week.
The report on wholesale prices showed inflation remained elevated but improved from June and came in slightly below expectations. That reinforced investor bets that the Federal Reserve may wait before raising interest rates again, which would be supportive for equities and mildly negative for the dollar and rate-sensitive assets.
Lower oil prices also helped sentiment by reducing pressure on inflation expectations. Real-estate shares were among the stronger performers, while some technology names lagged after investors questioned profit margins despite solid quarterly results.
