The Buffalo Bills signed veteran defensive lineman Greg Gaines on Tuesday as they look to bolster their defensive front. Gaines, 30, brings seven NFL seasons of experience and spent the past three years with Tampa Bay in a backup role.
Gaines began his career with the Los Angeles Rams after being selected in the fourth round of the 2019 draft out of Washington. He played four seasons there, starting in his final two years, including the Rams' Super Bowl-winning 2021 campaign.
Over 108 games, Gaines has made 34 starts and recorded 14 1/2 sacks and 16 tackles for loss. He is expected to compete for a reserve role behind projected starters Ed Oliver, Deone Walker and rookie T.J. Sanders.
Buffalo has an immediate need for depth at the position because Phidarian Mathis will miss the first three games of the season under NFL suspension. The Bills also opened a roster spot by releasing defensive lineman Tommy Akingbesote.
