Buss family will sell minority ownership stake in Lakers to Kushner and Iger, reports say
- The Buss family has voted to sell its 17.8% minority stake in the Los Angeles Lakers, according to ESPN and The Athletic.
- The sale would end the Buss family’s 47-year ownership role in the franchise founded by Jerry Buss.
- Jeanie Buss, who has served as the Lakers’ governor since 2013, appears likely to lose that role under the new ownership structure.
- The Lakers were previously valued at $12.5 billion in a deal that would shift control to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger, pending NBA approval.
The Buss family has decided to sell its remaining minority stake in the Los Angeles Lakers, according to reports from ESPN and The Athletic. The family said in a statement that it had chosen to exit the ownership role in the team while it still could.
The move would end the Buss family’s 47 years as owners of the Lakers, a period that began when Jerry Buss bought the franchise in 1979. Jeanie Buss has served as the team’s governor since her father’s death in 2013.
The Lakers were previously sold in a controlling-stake deal to Dodgers owner Mark Walter at a valuation of $10 billion, and Walter later reached an agreement reported to involve Josh Kushner and Bob Iger at a $12.5 billion valuation. Reports said Kushner and Iger would take about 83% ownership after the family’s remaining shares are included.
The agreement still needs approval from the NBA’s board of governors, a process that could take months. The reports also said Jeanie Buss likely would no longer be able to remain the team’s governor because that role requires at least 15% ownership.
