Hawaii still recovers from Hurricane Lala and prepares for a possible cyclone
- Hawaii communities were still dealing with damage from Hurricane Lala, which ripped roofs off homes, knocked down trees, covered roads with mud and rocks, and left thousands without power.
- Forecasters warned that a tropical depression southeast of the islands could become a tropical storm and pass near or south of the Big Island this weekend.
- The Central Pacific Hurricane Center said the system could bring as much as 15 inches of rain to the Big Island, raising the risk of flooding, landslides and dangerous surf.
- Officials said Hurricane Lala has been linked to two deaths in Hawaii, including an older man found after a welfare check and 93-year-old May Doi, who was found after neighbors said she tried to escape floodwaters.
- About 13,200 Hawaiian Electric customers on the Big Island were still without power on Thursday, and repairs in heavily damaged areas could take at least two weeks.
Hawaii was still recovering from Hurricane Lala as officials monitored another storm system that could affect the islands in the coming days. The weekend hurricane damaged homes, roads and utility service across parts of the state, and thousands of customers remained without electricity on Thursday.
Weather officials said a west- and northwest-moving depression southeast of the islands could strengthen into a tropical storm and pass near or south of the Big Island this weekend. The Central Pacific Hurricane Center warned that the system could bring heavy rain, flooding, landslides and strong rip currents.
Hurricane Lala had already produced major impacts on the Big Island, including severe rainfall, washed-out roads, damaged bridges and collapsed sections of roadway that cut off access to some communities. The storm was also tied to two deaths in the state.
State officials, including Governor Josh Green, planned to brief the public on the potential new cyclone and the ongoing recovery effort. In remote parts of the Hawaiian archipelago, a charter boat carrying a 16-person crew working on marine debris also moved out of the storm’s expected path.
