Jenny Simpson said in an Instagram post that a rare heart condition caused the cardiac arrest she suffered in June and that she will not return to running. She said she was diagnosed with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy, or ARVC, which triggered dangerous heart rhythms.
Simpson collapsed while pacing a girls' mile race at an event in Raleigh, North Carolina. She received CPR on the track, and an automated external defibrillator was used before medics took her to a hospital.
In her post, Simpson said it would be dangerous to return to running. She wrote that the running chapter of her life had ended, while adding that she was grateful to still be alive.
Simpson, now 39, was one of the United States' most successful women’s 1,500-meter runners for roughly a decade beginning in 2007. She won the world title in 2011, finished second at the world championships twice, and won Olympic bronze in Rio in 2016.
