Australia’s Lani Pallister upset Katie Ledecky in the women’s 800-meter freestyle at the Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, California. Pallister won in 8:06.10, taking down Ledecky’s championship record from 2018 and spending much of the race at a world-record pace.
Ledecky, a four-time Olympic champion in the event, finished second in 8:07.26. The time was her best of the season, and she said she was pleased with the swim even in defeat.
The result marked Ledecky’s first international loss in the 800 free and only her second defeat in an 800 free final since 2010. Pallister said afterward that she had been locked in and focused on the race.
The same session also featured Kate Douglass of the United States lowering her own world record in the women’s 50 freestyle to 23.19.
