A Pablo Picasso etching stolen from a Milwaukee art gallery in 2018 has been recovered after a local landlord found it while clearing out a vacant apartment. The work, titled “Torero,” was reported missing from Bill DeLind’s gallery and had been thought lost for good.
The landlord, Tim Dertz, said he found the framed piece in an unusual spot on a wall in an apartment that had been vacated after an eviction. He showed it to an antique dealer friend, who identified it as a Picasso and believed it matched the stolen artwork. Dertz then turned it over to police, who contacted DeLind.
DeLind said he immediately recognized the print and confirmed that the sticker from his DeLind Fine Art Appraisals gallery was still on the back. He said the piece was one of 30 known signed copies and that he was stunned by the discovery.
Milwaukee police said the theft case remains under investigation. The artwork is being held by police while the person who had commissioned it for sale through DeLind’s gallery works with an insurance company, according to DeLind.
