Sony Pictures said 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' set a new North American opening-weekend record with $360 million in ticket sales. The total topped the previous mark of $357 million set by 'Avengers: Endgame' in 2019.
The studio had forecast an opening of about $355 million, but a stronger Sunday pushed the film past that estimate. Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, said the record would be a point of pride for the studio.
Before 'Avengers: Endgame,' no film had opened above $300 million domestically. Earlier record holders included 'Avengers: Infinity War' and 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens.' Tom Holland's previous Spider-Man film, 'No Way Home,' also ranked among the top openings with $260 million during the pandemic era.
